  • Guest Gig - Edition 9 with Aakanksha & Kanika!

One of our favourites and most exciting events, Guest Gig, returns With Aakanksha Kapoor and Kanika Bhatia!

With multiple shared interests (they're both vegetarian, love dogs and to travel), it'll be a super interesting night and we're pretty sure both of them are going to be absolutely smashing barkeeps for the night!
We are bringing them together not to spar but to sell maximum possible drinks in the night, and all for a good cause. Cocktails & Dreams, Speakeasy has pledged 20% of the profit for the night to Rasoi on Wheels, an NGO operating out of Gurgaon, that feeds almost 30,000 people every month!

    About Kanika:
Kanika Bhatia is one of the oldest friends of speaks has been around for the best of times and the worst! We met when we were barely six months old, and as they say, she smiled her way into our hearts with that crazy sense of humour of hers. With all the spicy cocktails in the world and many late night chats (much after closing time) we saw her fall in love and marry the love of her life and we couldn’t have been happier! She will be making some cocktails just for you all, so come down and show some love to this crazy person who loves her dogs and cocktails (not in same order) more than anything else in the world!

"Since I have been in love with The Beatles ever since I can remember I can think of no better way to pay tribute to my absolutely fav band in the world." - Kanika
Here's her lovely menu! Check it out ♥

Across the Universe - A lovely combination of Gin, black tea and fresh mango puree.
Here Comes the Sun - Whisky with fresh orange, homemade ginger soda, lime and aromatic bitters.

I Wanna Hold Your Hand - Gin unfused cucumber, homemade thyme bitters, fresh lime and tonic.

    About Aakanksha:

Our second guest bartender for the night is the vibrant and super energetic Aakanksha Kapoor! Aakanksha used to head marketing and retail for I Say Organic (still part-time works with I Say).
She consults in business strategy and marketing for some adventure and sustainability related companies and basically loves to work around things she's passionate about.
She's now in the process of setting up a non-profit in the field of education which should go live later this year.
Apart from her love for nature, all things clean and green and sustainable (and obviously organic), she also absolutely LOVES running. It's been a big part of her life for the last 1 year.
No points for guessing what her menu revolves around! Of course, she's added a lil' dose of goodness to all her drinks and tried using all things natural and fresh!
Here are her cocktails for the night, you've got to try them all!

Cut the Carb - Bourbon, bitters, homemade maple and almond mash (instead of the classic sugar cube).
Gin Guzzler - Gin, kaffir and chunks of fresh malta and homemade orange bitters!
Electric Vodka - Get your dose of buzz from this refreshing cocktail made with Vodka, fresh cherries and rosewater.
Tequila Footprint - The kinda footprint we're okay with. A spicy Margarita made with Tequila, fresh green capsicum, and a hint of green chilli.

We'll also be having a football special round this time! Cause, FIFA FEVER!

    Infrequently Asked Questions

    a) How many members to a team
We like to be liberal in these matters, but will probably draw the line at 5, unless persuaded otherwise

    b) What's in it for me?
Goodies from the bar, Books from Hachette, the pleasure of our company, the sweat on your brow….

    c) Format
We're not sure yet. Expect it to be a mix of pen and paper and oral examination. Every gin joint in every city is different, so we'll take a few more nights and few more drink's before we figure out the method in our madness.

    d) Team names

Keep it short. The more creative the name, the greater the chance you have of winning Chugh's affections.

    e) Questions?
We're in a bar, you're drinking, so we're not exactly going to be asking you stuff which needs deep thought. All we ask is that you have a reasonable idea of the world around you - sports, film, current affairs, and occasionally take a creative leap to connect two thoughts in your head which add up to an answer. And as we know a little bit of alcohol goes a long way in making those leaps, so drink up and enjoy the show.

All this reading makes you thirsty? Come to the Drink & Think quiz with Chugh and Chanty and try and beat them at their own game.

Guest Gig returns With Nirmal & Rohan! This time around we have two regulars and "Lovers" (in their own words) of Speaks and all things boozy.

We are bringing them together not to spar but to sell maximum possible drinks in the night, and all for a good cause. ABOUT NIRMAL-
Nirmal is an adventurer at heart, an avid biker, animal lover and a newly turned vegan( don't say we didn't warn you earlier). She will be making or should we say "Stirring" up some NAMO inspired cocktails!

The cocktails that he’s got lined up are a modern twist on some of the classics of the cocktail world, going by the names of his cocktails… you can be assured you’re in for a very very very interesting night.

Covfefe - With Grants Whisky, Black walnut bitters, Maple and orange peel this cocktail is as complicated as its name.

Grab it by The Hanky-Panky- Hendricks Gin, Red wine, Balsamic vinegar, and sweet vermouth is stirred and served in a Hendricks tea cup if you please. ( We say grab it!)

  • Quizzing with Chugh & Chanty - 13th Jan

Starting the new year with our favourites - Join our dazzling duo, Chugh & Chanty, drop by with your own team, or join an existing one!

Win yourself lots of goodies; from a bottle (Thank you, Jameson!) to some drinks to tons of books and much more ;)

    Profiles of the quizzers -

  • Jazz Standards by Sonam Kalra

We are super duper excited to be presenting Jazz Standards by Sonam Kalra! And with Christmas around the corner, and our 'Winter Warmers' promo, this shall be one special night, just for you folks!

    PROFILE:
Sonam Kalra has been trained in Indian Classical and Western music traditions and is equally adept at singing both genres. Sonam has learned Indian Classical music from Smt. Shubha Mudgal and Pt. Sarathi Chatterjee and has also studied Gospel and Jazz with Ashley Clement in Singapore, as well as classical opera under the noted tenor, Hur Chul Young.
Sonam is known for her powerful yet sensitive voice and ability to blend styles, yet stay true to the music. Her singing reflects the special meaning it holds for her and she brings to it a truth that can move you from deep within, with a freshness and gaiety that are both invigorating and infectious.
A few years ago Sonam conceptualised and developed The Sufi Gospel Project, an effort to blend all the voices of faith, through the use of song, music and the spoken word. Traditional western gospel melds with Indian classical sounds, and Indian spiritual texts are enriched by elements of western poetry to create a sound that touches every soul. Revealing that no matter what the language of the lyrics, or the ethnicity of the sounds, there is but one language, the language of faith. And that is the universal truth. Khusrau blends with Amazing Grace, Kabir shares the stage with Abide with Me and Bulleh Shah’s voice is heard amidst English and Gaelic texts.
Between The Sufi Gospel Project and her rendition of classic ballads and jazz standards, Sonam is fast becoming a familiar voice at prestigious venues and festivals in India and around the world. In 2014 alone, Sonam has sung in the UK, USA, Oman, Kuwait, Lebanon, Tunisia, Mauritius and Egypt, apart from several shows around India.
Some of the prestigious music festivals she has performed at include the Kabir Festival in Bombay, Krishnakriti Festival in Hyderabad, Kalaa Utsavam in Singapore, Shared History in South Africa, The India Show in Toronto, The Jaipur Literary Festival, the Delhi International Arts Festival, the Bengaluru International Arts Festival, The World Sufi Spirit Festival in Nagaur, the Rajasthan International Folk Festival in Jodhpur, The Khushwant Singh Festival in Kasauli and several others. She has performed at the NCPA (Mumbai), the Royal Opera House (Cairo), Nehru Centre (London), the Weaver’s Collective and Anantara (Kolkata), TEDx Talks (New Delhi and Rourkela), Blue Frog (Delhi and Mumbai), Chowdiah Hall (Bengaluru), JT-PAC (Kochi), Neemrana Fort Palace, at Rajiv Gandhi’s Samadhi on his birth anniversary in front of the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, the Union cabinet, members of the Gandhi family and many others and in cities as diverse as Srinagar, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Kasauli. Earlier this year she sang at a concert for peace to commemorate the European Union being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012. Sonam and the Sufi Gospel Project made their TV debut on “Coke Studio” on MTV.

In January, 2013 the Mail Today newspaper listed Sonam as one of “the 50 creative powerhouses & impresarios who have elevated Delhi from a cultural desert to one of the world’s leading arts capitals”. Elle magazine profiled Sonam in a list of “Transformers: Women Who Own the Future”.

  • Winston Balman & The Prophets of Rock!

Winston Balman the “artist” came into being way back in 2003, while in school in Dehradun. It was then, that he found his calling, and realized he wanted to devote his life to music and other performing arts. You can often hear him say this with a smile, ''if I wasn't doing this I would have been doing nothing ''. There is an intensity about his music that makes you want to go “once more”. We don’t hear a lot of people say this today, but being an old schooler himself, this is what he has to say about music – “I feel it is not the complexity of the music that is involved but the person or story behind it that make even the simplest of songs sound beautiful. I believe that music should be able to sow seeds of happiness and tell stories. Most of my songs are story telling and I like to keep them that way”.

    https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=winston+balman
    The Band
    Drums HanuJeet Singh
A drummer is the backbone of the Band “ says the twenty-year-old Hanujeet Singh from Khalsa College, DU as we ask him about his role in the field of music.Since we share the same hometown. I have seen him roll his drums enthusiastically in school competitions. Back in Jamshedpur. However Delhi’s music circuit has helped him grow as an artist in general, and a drummer in particular. He has played approximately one hundred and ten Gigs so far in Delhi itself! He has also been an assistant judge for a music competition at SGGS IN IP University. For him, every day is a new journey. There hasn’t been a single day when you wouldn’t find him practicing his drums

    Archit Agrawal
Hailing from the Kasganj District of Aligarh Archit is one mixed bag of blues and Rock n Roll. Ever since he hit being an adult, the blues adopted him and he, picked up the bass guitar. Deriving inspiration from the likes of John Paul Jones, Clapton, Pino Palladino and many more musical maestros, Archit is known for his funky solos and groovy bass work for Delhi based band Slapdash Tavern. Given the first opportunity, he would whip out his bass and bust out into the hoochie coochie man Melody.

    Sagar Sharma
A Delhi boy, Sagar is a known figure in the music scene in Delhi . He has been playing the electric guitar for a while with some very popular Bands in the city. He is known for his beaming solos and his chocolate boy good looks. Always in a great mood and willing to jam sagar has loves to kill on stage.Sagar is a young and versatile guitar player, composer blending melodic rock and blues styles, hugely inspired by the classic 70's and 80's era, and influenced by guitar players like Andy Timmons, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Gary Moore.
Apart from musical inclination, He is also an Illustrator/Artist and Animator

Guest Gig returns With the Battle of the Besties Neha Yadav v/s Shweta Jain! This one will be one to watch out for as we have two formidable leading ladies from the world of marketing and public relations. As both come with an impressive habit of winning, we will be cheering from the sidelines as should you! As always - May the best Barkeep win. ABOUT SHWETA- Shweta has spent years as a Marketeer and a Dot connector, and is one of the oldest friends of Speaks. She has travelled the world in search of ( or as they claim) the perfect serve, and a perfect evening. An ardent traveller, walker, reader and a mother of two munchkins, she is ready to impress you with her newfound skills in the bar, and if you are good to her, there could be some Hendricks coming your way. (Bribes always welcome) All the drinks she has designed are an ode to her favourite bars across the globe- EDINBURGH'S WEE RED - The Wee Red is a combination of Grants, Ginger Juice, Red Berry Puree , shaken and served in a coupe if you please. MARSEILLE VIEUX PORT - Is a delicate combination of Hendrick's Gin, Lavender Bitters and Freshly squeezed Cucumber juice. Served over crushed ice, this Cocktail will delight you like none another. MONKEYING IN SINGAPORE- Dedicated to Manhattan bar, this cocktail is a twist on a classic Manhattan, and serves Monkey Shoulder, dash of Red wine, cherry brine, and balsamic vinegar. CND INFUSION - And last but not the least Speaks. Everybody's favoritist bartenders bar in india ( Shweta's words , not ours) - CnD Speakeasy, this Cocktail uses infused Grants Scotch whisky, balanced and nuanced with Star anise, Cinnamon with orange and Honey. ABOUT NEHA - Neha is right after our own heart , with the fact that she is half Nepalese, a tennis player, and a footballer makes her a favourite! Not only will she win you with her non stop chatter but the drinks are as delicious as they come. Her being super tech savvy might get you in her stories, and the fact that she has some gazillion followers will only help your cause ( check out @superneha83 if you don't believe us) Neha has designed her drinks after her favourite NETFLIX shows. Take our advice- Netflix and Chill with- The UNDERWOOD- Dark, spicy, strong and smoky. This cocktail takes after its name , and uses Bourbon infused in Cigar, with Hazelnut, and served as a sour. PABLO - A White sugar rimmed ( for obvious reasons) Dark rum based cocktail, that uses caramel, and is served in shots of three. There is no other way to serve Pablo. DRAPERS DRAM- Don Draper is as Old fashioned as they come and Drapers Dram is served with homemade bitters and a dash of butterscotch for some nuttieness. ( all puns intended) M For MOODY - This Gin, Orange and Maple combo will get you in the mood for all things sinful. So people of Delhi NCR, come on down to support your barwoman, as they get into the battle of the best barkeep! The one who sells the most wins. See you at Speaks!
